MKFM prize winner from Milton Keynes

From leaks to a new lease on space: How MK Loft Boarding transformed Amanda’s home in Newton Longville.

    The Spirit of Christmas Giving

For Amanda, winning MKFM's 24 Days of Christmas prize was more than just a festive treat—it was the solution to a problem she had been trying to tackle since moving into her Newton Longville home two years ago. Behind her entry was a story of challenges, resilience, and the hope of creating a warm and functional space for her family.

    Amanda’s Story

When Amanda moved to her 1950s home in Newton Longville, she had big dreams for what it could become. It was a fresh start for her family, and high on her priority list was making the loft a practical storage space. Having researched loft boarding extensively, Amanda knew it was the key to solving her storage challenges.

Two weeks after settling in, Amanda noticed something troubling: mould was developing in her children’s room. After careful inspection, the issue became clear—the roof had several leaks. The damp caused by these leaks had begun to take hold, making one of the children's bedrooms unsafe for her family. Amanda made the tough but necessary decision to prioritise fixing the roof and addressing the dampness. However, the repairs came with a hefty price tag, pushing her plans for loft boarding further down the list.

Adding to Amanda’s concerns was the condition of the loft itself. Accessing it safely was challenging, with an old ladder from her grandfather making it hazardous. Despite the setbacks, Amanda hoped that one day, she could create the safe, organised space her family needed. That’s when MKFM’s 24 Days of Christmas competition came along, and Amanda decided to take a chance.

    From Disbelief to Action

When Amanda found out she had won MK Loft Boarding’s Christmas prize, her initial reaction was disbelief. ‘I thought it was a scam,’ Amanda laughed. ‘I never win anything, so I couldn’t believe it was real.’ It wasn’t until MKFM reached out to confirm her win that the reality began to sink in.

Shortly after that, Amanda received a call from Ryan Evans, the owner of MK Loft Boarding, to congratulate her and book a survey of her loft. ‘I couldn’t believe how quickly it all happened,’ Amanda said. ‘Ryan called me within 24 hours of finding out I’d won, and before I knew it, we had a plan in place.’

The process was seamless and efficient. Amanda's loft was utterly transformed within just six weeks of the survey. From start to finish, the team at MK Loft Boarding ensured everything was handled with professionalism and care. Amanda appreciated the smooth process, which included clearing out the loft to ensure the project could start without delays.

The Challenges of the Loft Before

Before MK Loft Boarding stepped in, Amanda’s loft presented various challenges. The low pitch height made the space feel cramped and difficult to navigate. Insulation was exposed and uneven, and proper flooring made storage nearly impossible and unsafe. The wooden ladder leading into the loft further highlighted the space's inaccessibility.

Amanda explained that items like luggage, Christmas decorations, and other essentials were difficult to store safely and access when needed. Additionally, the insulation was not as effective as it could be for an older house, which further motivated her desire to have the loft boarded. As seen in the images, the loft was far from functional. Despite its potential, it was an area of the home Amanda couldn’t rely on. This made the prospect of winning the prize even more significant—a chance to create a practical and safe solution for her family finally.

The Transformation: A Dream Loft Come True

The transformation of Amanda’s loft was nothing short of extraordinary. What was once an unsafe, cramped space with exposed insulation was now a fully boarded, safe, and practical storage area. Adding a modern, secure loft ladder provided easier access and gave Amanda a sense of relief and peace of mind.

The project wasn’t without its challenges, as some adjustments needed to be made on the day of the installation. However, Amanda praised the team’s communication throughout the process, which ensured that any changes were handled seamlessly. Seeing her loft for the first time after completing the work, Amanda was overcome with emotion. ‘I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,’ she said. ‘It’s just 10 out of 10 service—I’m so pleased.’ Her gratitude and excitement were evident as she described how the transformation had exceeded her expectations.

The newly boarded loft didn’t just solve her storage problem; it gave Amanda’s home a renewed sense of order and functionality, creating a safe and organised space for her family. The improved pitch height made the space feel more open and inviting, making it usable.

A Gift That Keeps on Giving

Seeing Amanda's reaction made the entire project worthwhile for Ryan Evans, the owner of MK Loft Boarding. ‘I’m so glad we offered this prize,’ Ryan shared. ‘Knowing that it went to someone who genuinely needed it and seeing the difference it’s made—it’s gratifying.’

Amanda’s story powerfully reminded me of how a simple act of generosity can impact someone’s life. She says, ‘This has been a game-changer for me and my family. I can’t thank Ryan and the team enough.’

Through the MKFM’s 24 Days of Christmas giveaway, MK Loft Boarding raised loft boarding didn’t just give away a prize—they changed a life. Amanda’s story highlights the power of community, generosity, and the expertise of a local business dedicated to making a difference in Milton Keynes.
