Swimmer from Milton Keynes club wins two medals in Commonwealth Youth Games

A local swimmer has had huge success in the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Caribbean.

Harry Wynne-Jones, 17, won two medals in the 7th Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago. Harry was one of twelve swimmers to compete for the England side a couple weeks ago.

Harry won his silver medal in the 4x200 Mixed freestyle relay.

The English side finished just behind Australia and managed to beat the Welsh team.

Harry’s individual time of 1:51.23 broke the South East England and county records.

The following night, he managed to back up his team success with an individual medal. He stormed to silver medal with an outstanding time of 3:56.29 in the 400 freestyle, finishing just 2 seconds behind the winner.

Harry said: “To have the opportunity to represent my country has been a huge honour and to return home with two international medals is a dream come true for me.”

To go along with Harry’s two medals, he finished fourth in the gruelling 1500 freestyle.

However, he set a new lifetime best time of 15:35.47 which was a South East England open record as well as Oxfordshire and North Bucks county records.

Harry trains with City of Milton Keynes Swim Club and is studying for his A-Levels at The Royal Latin School in Buckingham.

City of Milton Keynes Swim Club Head Coach Greg Buck added: “Bringing home his - and the club’s - first ever international medals has made us all very proud but it’s only what he deserves. We’re now excited at what he can achieve next season.”

Harry’s successes helped England secure 23 swimming medals, topping the medals table with 9 gold, 10 silver and 4 bronze.

Earlier in the summer, Harry represented Great Britain at the European Junior Championships in Belgrade, Serbia and this season has also been part of national squads competing in Canada, Luxembourg and Sweden.
