MKFM REVIEW: The Birch in Woburn

Carly from the MKFM Team was invited along to The Birch in Woburn. Here is her review...

Victoria welcomed us into The Birch, took our drinks order and settled us into the bar area to have a read of the menu pointing out the specials board. There was a constant stream of people coming through the door each receiving the same warm welcome and nearly everyone was sent regards from whom I could only presume was the owner. Throughout our evening at The Birch this was a recurring theme where they make their guests feel very important to them which is a lovely touch.

We began with the Sharing Board which had a lovely selection of cheeses, meats, bread and the pickled carrots were amazing! I love anything pickled but these were something else! This is my favourite kind of starter where you get to have a pick at lots of different things.

My boyfriend chose the Venison from the specials menu which he said was really succulent and tasty. There was an orange sauce that accompanied it which was delicious and paired with the meat perfectly his only complaint was that there wasn't more of it! From when I’ve visited The Birch in the past I remembered it as being famous for its steaks so I obviously had to order steak! I went for the Rump steak & crevettes with peppercorn sauce. It was so good. Speaking to Victoria she said that they don't invite guests up to the griddle like they did pre-covid and they have also added many more dishes to the menu so as there is something for everyone but of course they have kept a good selection of steaks on the menu.

Before we moved onto dessert we had a chat with some of the waitresses. What a lovely bunch of girls that really love where they work and just want to make their guests feel comfortable. Evie spent a long time with us chatting through the dessert options which she said they get to enjoy at the end of their shifts. I chose the White chocolate and raspberry crème brulee and my Boyfriend opted for the Spiced apple crumble cheesecake with salted caramel ice cream. We went halves on each and they were both delicious and beautifully presented, we were then treated to a Lindor chocolate with our coffees.

The restaurant was busy throughout our meal, however never felt noisy, the separate bar area is perfect for pre and post dinner drinks and chats. If you are looking for somewhere to enjoy a meal out where the Chefs have put a lot of thought and knowledge into their dishes and where the staff make your custom feel appreciated then The Birch in Woburn is the place for you.

    New Autumn/Winter Menu

As the seasons change and the temperature outside cools, come in and warm yourself at The Birch with our new Autumn/Winter Menus!

Available from Friday 11th October 2024

    Our Food Ethos

We have championed the use of local produce for decades. Surrounded by amazing farms, our chef’s devise menus showcasing the best Bedfordshire/Buckinghamshire and their neighbouring counties have to offer.

As a small family owned and run restaurant we believe in building up great partnerships with other family businesses around us, that’s why we’re proud to use local family-run farms, growers and butchers with the same ethos regarding ethical farming for all our fresh ingredients, wherever possible.

    Lunch & Dinner Menu

Our new Lunch & Dinner Menu is full of exciting new dishes made from fresh seasonal ingredients.

Our stunning new starters include Chicken Liver Parfait Crème Brûlée with Guinness chutney and toasted brioche, and Smoked Haddock & Nduja Fishcake with poached egg and a citrus cream sauce – also available to up-grade to a lighter main, along with many of our other starter dishes.

Our new Sharing Board for 2  includes a selection of cheeses, continental cured meats, homemade pickles, sun-dried tomato salad, olives, griddled bloomer bread and a balsamic glaze and olive oil dip, which not only tastes amazing but is also great value!

For main course let us entice you with one of our new delicious dishes, like Pan Roasted Duck Breast with potato rosti, chard red onion, red chicory and port jus, or how about a Butter Bean & Pepper Goulash with tarragon dumplings; hearty and warming on those cold autumn days.

For those of you that love the classics, we still have our popular Homemade Chargrilled Burger – a homemade steak patty with bone marrow in a toasted brioche bun with smoked streaky bacon, cheddar cheese, tomato, little gem, gherkins and burger relish, served with beer battered onion rings and a choice of french fries or triple cooked chunky chips, and the iconic Beer Battered Fillet of Fish, a sustainable English caught haddock fillet in gluten free beer batter, served with tartare sauce, minted crushed peas, triple cooked chunky chips and charred lemon wedge.

And, as if that’s not enough to excite your appetites, we also have succulent steaks cooked to your preference, available ‘From The Grill’. Choose one of our locally sourced steaks cooked on the char-grill and served with triple cooked chunky chips or french fries, confit plum tomato, flat mushroom and watercress salad.  You can add a tasty sauce or even a whole crevette or two should you fancy a surf & turf!

    Sunday Lunch

We know many of you can’t imagine a Sunday without a Traditional Sunday Roast, so of course these are available on our new Sunday Menu.  Choose from Sirloin of Beef, Leg of Lamb, Loin of Pork and Chicken Supreme – all locally sourced from independent butchers – or our vegetarian Nut Roast, all served with Yorkshire pudding, crisp roast potatoes, honey roast parsnips, steamed market vegetables, cauliflower cheese, herb crushed carrots with brown butter and a red wine gravy.

But it’s not all roasts – we also offer Locally Sourced Steak Of The Day served with triple cooked chunky chips, flat mushroom, herb crusted tomato, lambs lettuce garnish and an additional choice of sauces, and our tasty Pan Fried Sea Bass Fillet with sautéed new potatoes, tenderstem broccoli and a tomato, pineapple and basil salsa, available with 1 or 2 fillets, depending on your appetite.

    Desserts

Grab a spoon and tuck into one of our scrumptious new desserts, like our Spiced Apple Crumble Cheesecake with fudge pieces and salted caramel ice cream, or our Chocolate Tart with an almond base and served with raspberry coulis and a fig and walnut ice cream – which is not only utterly delicious, but also dairy free and vegan.

Fancy something a little sweet, but don’t have room for pud? Then our brand new Chef’s Homemade Petit Fours, accompanied with your choice of complimentary coffee, is the perfect little indulgence to round off your meal!
