Darren D and Mrs D from MKFM Drive visited Mahabharat Indian restaurant in Winslow and here is their full review...
We have never counted the amount of Indian restaurants in Milton Keynes but it is fair to say we are spoilt for choice.
Every so often it is nice to drive out into one of the surrounding villages and try something different.
On a cold winters evening we ventured into Winslow and discovered Mahabharat in Market Square. Mahabharat is set over two floors in a grade two listed building.
The website states that it was built by Sir Christopher Wren and retained an "olde world style" in its décor.
Mahabharat is certainly unique with it’s décor, being spilt over two floors with cosy eating areas, it certainly had the feeling of going back in time.
Another thing that was noticeable was there were plenty of smiling waiters ready to serve us in a restaurant that is highly regarded by locals as "one of the most authentic Indian restaurant in the city".
Once seated we were presented with the menus and asked if we wanted papadums and drinks whilst we ponder the menu.
Looking at the menu it was certainly like going back in time with 1990s prices.
For example:
Mushroom Rice £2.95 (we have been charged up to £6.95 elsewhere)
Naan Bread £2.40
Mixed Vegetable Curry £3.85 with meat dishes starting at just £5.95.
Once drinks and papadums had arrived, we ordered our go to dishes and enjoyed being in a cosy village setting with the aroma of dishes coming from the table opposite.
We started with one of our go to starters Tandoori Chicken. This arrived in a sizzling skillet and was served to our plate with plenty of fried onions that were sizzling from the skillet.
The chicken was full of juicy white breast meat perfectly marinated and not too spicy, the fresh side salad set the starter off really well and got our juices following.
Next was the main courses that consisted of Chicken Korai and a Lamb Balti.
Again both dishes were full of tender meat and every dish was perfectly spiced and flavoursome. Mahabharat certainly know how to layer the spices that give their dishes that authentic taste.
The naan bread and rice were exceptional value and were equally as good in quality and taste as our starter and main dish.
Mahabharat not only offers great value but one of the most extensive range of dishes you will come across including Tandoori, Thali, Biryani, Balti, chef specials and all the curries you could wish for.
There’s something for everyone with a choice of chicken, lamb, fish, king prawns, vegetable and quorn dishes.
All in all it is 100% worth visiting and going back in time, the service was exceptional and it’s a meal that won’t break the bank in an olde English setting.
Mahabharat is located on 25 Market Square, Winslow, Buckingham, MK18 3AB. You can call to book a table on 01296 713611 or visit their website for more details here.
