MKFM Review: Hairspray The Musical at Milton Keynes Theatre

Maggie, along with her sister and mum, went to see Hairspray The Musical last night (02/09), and here is her review...

As someone who has watched the Hairspray film several times, to say I was excited to watch it LIVE would be an understatement.

Hairspray The Musical was an explosion of energy, colour, and nostalgia that transported us straight into the lively streets of 1960s Baltimore. The production was packed with catchy tunes, dynamic choreography, and a heartwarming message of acceptance, which did not disappoint.

From the opening number, "Good Morning Baltimore," the show had us captivated. The lead actress who played Tracy Turnblad really pulled our heartstrings with her almost contagious determination. She brought the perfect blend of humour and heart to the role.

The supporting cast also shined, particularly in the hilarious and heartfelt performances of Tracy's parents, Edna and Wilbur Turnblad. The chemistry between the two characters brought warmth and comic relief, especially in their tender duet, “You’re Timeless to Me.” I could almost feel the love and I’d like to think that’s how the rest of the audience felt. After their performance, they received a standing ovation, which we all believed was well-deserved.

The comedy in the show was top-tier! I found myself still chuckling at a joke or a line when I got home. Even the performers who were on the sidelines or in the background still found a way to captivate us, with their gestures or facial expressions still enough to make us laugh.

The ensemble delivered electrifying dance routines and harmonies, especially during the show's iconic numbers like "Welcome to the 60s" and "You Can't Stop the Beat." My sister and I found ourselves bopping our heads and trying our best not to break out in dance with the performers!

The show’s message about overcoming prejudice and embracing diversity remains just as powerful today. Its treatment of racial integration and body positivity is woven seamlessly into the fun, making it a production with both substance and sparkle. The choreography was lively and intricate, and the set design captured the retro vibe of the 60s with vibrant colours and playful details.

In terms of production quality, Hairspray The Musical delivered a visually stunning experience. The lighting, costumes, and staging are all top-notch, transporting audiences back in time while keeping them hooked on every scene.

Overall, the show was a feel-good triumph, mixing humour, heart, and high-energy performances that left us dancing in our seats, even my mum! The show was everything I expected it to be and then more.
