Carly could not wait to return to Milton Keynes Theatre last night (15/10) to see the highly-anticipated Chicago and here is her full review...
The experience
I love a trip to Milton Keynes Theatre but this one felt extra special at it was the day before my Boyfriend's Birthday and a musical that we have both been eager to see. In the queue we could hear the excitement as family of the cast were proudly discussing who they were there to support and with the big names in this show it felt very exclusive. We took our seats and the live band opened with the familiar sounds of 'All that jazz' which immediately got my shoulders going! The clever thing about this show is the band stays on the stage throughout and the conductor almost becomes a character himself. Having seen the movie I was looking forward to the Cell Block Tango, the way it was performed fascinated me and the repeated words like Cicero and Lipschitz made me smile. Brenda Edward’s playing Mama Morton is just perfect. Her very clear motherly nature came across and I couldn't have thought of anyone better to have been cast in that role. Kevin Clifton’s entrance as Billy Flynn amidst a sea of feathers was an amazing sight, particularly as the whole ensemble were some of the most beautiful actors I have seen. If you have never seen the show I urge you to book a ticket now I promise you will have the best time!
The story
Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, CHICAGO is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today's tabloids.
