Here is a list of EVs that rank among the top in fastest accelerating cars.
Going fast is so thrilling that it has become a sport, quite literally. We, as humans, have always chased speed since the very nascent stage of automobiles. More than a century and much needed innovation later, we have fast cars that almost seem unreal. And even though gasoline cars have been around for a long time, it is mostly EVs that rank among the top in fastest accelerating cars on the planet list. Sure, the top speed record still belongs to a gasoline car, but acceleration is even more thrilling, right?
We don’t know for sure if gasoline cars will ever reach 0-60MPH in less than 2 seconds, or if it is even theoretically possible. However, electric cars are here to change all of that. For example, you could get a Tesla Model 3 without supercar pricing and still witness insane acceleration. But it is still nowhere nearly as quick as some of the top EVs on this list. We will take a look at the fastest acceleration times and the top speed of each car arranged in descending order in terms of acceleration times.
So, with that out of the way, here is a list of the fastest electric cars in the world –
8. Tesla Model 3 Performance [0-60 MPH in 3.1 seconds – Top Speed- 162 MPH]
The Model 3 is one of the quickest sedans in the world. Tesla offers both Performance and Long Range versions of the sedan, each specific to the purpose self-explanatorily derived from their names. The Tesla Model 3 comes with two electric motors mounted on both front and rear axle. With a 0-60MPH time of a mere 3.1 seconds, you almost forget that it is actually an EV. It costs around $64,000 but we think that it is a fair price for the performance it delivers. The top speed is limited to 162 MPH and that should be more than enough for most.
7. Lotus Evija [0-60 MPH in 3.0 seconds – Top Speed - 200+ MPH]
Lotus is making an epic comeback with their first-ever all-electric car – the Evija. This hypercar not only has the looks to make you drool all over it, but it has also got the performance to back it up. With a quad motor setup, the Evija produces a magnanimous 1972 horsepower and 1254 lb-ft of torque. Take a second to let those numbers sink in. It weighs only 3700 lbs, which makes it the lightest EV hypercar ever. They claim that it could hit 60 MPH in under 3 seconds, but we think that they are being pretty modest. Also, the top speed is above 200 MPH, which is another insane stat. However, remember that to get one you would have to shell out $2.3 million.
6. Porsche Taycan Turbo S [0-60 MPH in 2.6 seconds – Top Speed - 161 MPH]
The Taycan is the first-ever all-electric car from Porsche and it has enjoyed quite the welcome party. Sitting at the top of the Taycan lineup, the Turbo S variant is not only known for its unbeatable sporty handling and engaging driving dynamics, but it is also ridiculously quick. It comes with a dual-motor setup churing out 616 horsepower. However, it can be equipped with Overboost Power and Launch Control, which takes the power figures to a total of 750 ponies. This motor setup combined with 2-speed transmission takes around 2.6 seconds to hit 60 MPH from a halt. The top speed is limited to 161 MPH. Sadly, it is way too expensive at around 200 grand.
5. Tesla Model X Plaid [0-60 MPH in 2.5 seconds – Top Speed - 163 MPH]
The Tesla Model X Plaid takes a mere 2.5 seconds to hit 60 MPH from a standstill, despite being a heavy SUV. It produces 1,020 horses from its three motor setup. The top speed is limited to 163 MPH but it is more than you would ever need. The Model X Plaid is also expensive costing you around $140,000. You also get a decent range of around 313 miles. But who cares about the range if you can go 0-60MPH in 2.5 seconds in an SUV!?
4. Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance [0-60 MPH in 2.5 seconds – Top Speed - 168 MPH]
Lucid took the EV world by storm when they revealed their Air sedan. It has got a sleek, modern and refreshing design language and critics also praised how futuristic it looks. It is available in a number of different trims but at the top of the echelon sits the Dream Edition Performance. It offers mind-blowing 0-60 MPH acceleration time of 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 168 MPH. Insane! Since it was designed by the same man who was behind the Tesla Model S, the Air surely does not disappoint. Oh, and it is also one of the longest-range EVs in the world. Best of both worlds.
3. Tesla Model S Plaid [0-60 MPH in 1.99 seconds – Top Speed - 200 MPH]
Now, we are entering uncharted territory. Keeping blisteringly quick and never-seen-before acceleration aside, the Model S Plaid also has an insane top speed of 200 MPH. Oh, and it is also practical and can fit your entire family. Remember – it is a sedan. It is quite astounding to think about how Tesla achieved this feat, but they did. With a 0-60 MPH run in under 2 seconds, it is the quickest car available for purchase right now. It also features the same three-motor setup as the Model X Plaid with 1,020 horses and chart-topping speeds.
2. Tesla Roadster [0-60 MPH in 1.9 seconds – Top Speed - 250+ MPH]
Tesla released their first EV in their lineup- Roadster with a similar design language as that of Lotus Elise 14 years back and it put them on the map thanks to its prowess. Since then, Tesla has become the most popular, most successful, and most innovative EV brand in the world. This seems like a good time to bring the OG Roadster back. It has been constantly delayed but Elon Musk has also stressed that it will come soon. Tesla claims that the new Roadster will have a 0-60 MPH of just 1.9 seconds, maybe lower, which just seems unrealistic at this point. Tesla claims it is the “quickest car in the world”. Oh, along with those insane stats, it also has a range of 620 miles. Also, they say that it will have a wheel torque of 7,376 lb-ft. Huh!? As if all of that wasn’t mind-boggling enough, the claimed top speed is over 250 MPH. Woah. However, we must mention that all of this should be taken with a grain of salt as these are the company claimed figures. We need to wait for actual tests.
1. Rimac Nevera [0-60 MPH in 1.85 seconds – Top Speed - 258 MPH]
Topping this list, the Rimac Nevera is the quickest car in the world. It features a quad motor setup that churns out mind-blowing 1914 hp and 1741 lb-ft of torque. When you floor the pedal, it reaches 60 MPH from a standstill in 1.85 seconds and covers the quarter mile in 8.6 seconds. It really makes you question if this is physically possible. It has a decent range and is highly aero-efficient. However, Rimac Nevera is too hot to handle and since only 150 of these are made, it costs nearly 2.3 million USD. You better not go up against it in a drag strip.
