Farmers are warning that the UK could face a severe shortage of lettuce from the middle of next week due to the ongoing heatwave.
A large increase in demand, due to the hot weather, plus the heat having an impact on the crop growing in the UK are being blamed for the shortfall.
90% of lettuce leaves are usually home grown, but now plans are being made to import it from as far away as the USA in order to keep supplies available.
Last week, a huge 18 million lettuces were sold, around 40% more in comparison to the same time last year.
The British Leafy Salad Growers Association has put out the warnings, saying the weather is causing havoc for their members.
Some suppliers have reached out to other countries like Germany for supplies, but they are also suffering for the same reasons as the UK.
It is reported that both broccoli and cauliflower could also be hit on a smaller scale.
