Reports have emerged suggesting that MK Dons are interested in signing Preston North End defender Kevin O’Connor this summer.
According to the Irish Sun, 23-year-old O’Connor is one of four players that have been told they can leave the Deepdale club if they receive the right offer.
This comes after the former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international failed to make much of an impact at the Championship club.
O’Connor joined Preston last summer after making 69 appearances for Cork City in the top tier of football in his native Ireland – a club he also made four Europa League qualifying round appearances for prior to his transfer.
But since arriving in England, the young left-back has made just twelve appearances in the Football League – eight for Preston and four during a loan spell at League One club Fleetwood Town.
With club captain Dean Lewington on the wrong side of 30, it is highly likely that manager Paul Tisdale will be looking for his long-term replacement in the near future.
O’Connor, however, is likely to be just a short-term addition with the Irish Sun reporting that the club is interested in taking him on a loan deal ahead of next season.
While O’Connor has yet to impress at a higher level in England, MK Dons could be an ideal destination with the team having been relegated to the fourth tier.
Tisdale has already signed four new players since arriving at the Dons in June but is likely to keep adding to his team as he aims to lead the club to promotion back into the third tier at the first time of asking.
Tisdale’s activity in the transfer market has impressed Dons fans so far and more additions in the coming days or weeks will be sure to give them some extra confidence ahead of their upcoming League Two campaign.
