Performing arts students from Milton Keynes College and young people from in and around Milton Keynes will take over the stage at MK Gallery with ‘New Voices’ on Saturday 2nd April at 10am.
Funded by Arts Council England, ‘Taking the Stage’ celebrates inspirational women in theatre and film and provides a platform for local and professional females to showcase new plays, hold conversations on industry topics, show curated films by African filmmakers and host workshops on playwrighting and filmmaking.
‘New Voices’ is an exciting new element to the four-day programme, which runs from Wednesday 30th March to Saturday 2nd April.
This exciting strand brings together industry professionals and young people from Milton Keynes to create two new and inspiring theatre pieces.
Young creatives from MK College have been working with Haste Theatre – an all-female professional theatre company - for eight weeks to devise a performance around the question ‘What Happens Next?’. This piece will represent the young people’s views, hopes, fears and dreams for the future.
The Play’s The Thing Theatre Company have put together a Creative Youth Board (CYB) made up of young people from in and around Milton Keynes.
The CYB gives members a programme of personal and professional development opportunities, as well as the chance to develop a new performance at a two-day residency with MK Theatre and local theatre practitioner, Georgia Tillery Randak, from MK based Black Sheep Collective CIC.
Rosemary Hill, Artistic Director at The Play’s The Thing, says: “Supporting young creatives and getting their stories out into the local community is of great importance to us.
“Young people have a voice and it’s about time the next generation of theatre makers were seen and heard. By giving them this platform and the fantastic opportunity of working with professional theatre practitioners, we can help young people in developing and shaping their creative futures.
“The theatre pieces by our young creatives are exceptional and I hope you will join us in celebrating and supporting them next week at ‘Taking the Stage’.”
