'Use alternative route where possible': Nearly five miles of congestion due to lorry fire on M1 near Milton Keynes

There is currently 4.5 miles of congestion following a lorry fire on the M1 near Milton Keynes this morning (21/5).

Highways England reported the incident shortly after 10am, which has taken place between Junction 14 to Junction 15 on the Northbound carriageway.

Traffic has stopped on the Northbound carriageway due to the lorry itself, while traffic on the Southbound carriageway has also been stopped temporarily due to "thick smoke" caused by the blaze.

There are currently long delays on the approach between Junction 14 and 15 and people are being encouraged to avoid this area if possible.

Highways England added:  "Average journey times are now 50 minutes above normal for this time of day, with 4 and a half miles of congestion. Please allow extra time for your journey."
