Upcoming event to raise awareness for drug and alcohol family support in Milton Keynes

A Milton Keynes woman, who runs regular events that bring attention, awareness, and action to help local charities, is hosting a Drug and Alcohol Family Support event next month.

Melanie Prince, Co-founder of Purple Disco, an events team that takes action and brings awareness to local charities in and across Milton Keynes, will be hosting an event for charity, DAFS (Drug and Alcohol Family Support) on Saturday, September 14 at Revolution, Xscape.

Melanie told MKFM, “Our next event is on September 14th and will be held at Revolution in Xcape, who have kindly let us use the top half of their venue as we needed to expand to allow more capacity. Our chosen charity for September is called DAFS, they provide drug and alcohol family support, and they do amazing work supporting the families of those battling addiction.”

Last year, Melanie started hosting empowerment events for female domestic abuse survivors. As a survivor herself, she wanted to give women a safe space to connect with other women and hear some uplifting stories from others who have been able to rebuild their lives.

Melanie told MKFM, “Purple Disco is an MK House Music event that brings attention, awareness, and action to help amazing local charities who need fundraising to continue the important activities in supporting people facing a plethora of challenges.”

Following an event, Melanie was approached by Ben White, who had previously helped run club nights to raise money for domestic violence (DV) survivors. Ben suggested collaborating with Melanie on a fundraiser in Milton Keynes.

Melanie and Ben then started planning Purple Disco earlier this year with their first event held at Middleton Pavilion on June 26.

To the surprise of both Melanie and Ben, the event sold out and welcomed over 200 attendees. They had 5 DJs volunteer their time and skills. They had a sound system and lights donated for the event, and a beautiful glitter photo wall.

The night was a huge success and after many requests, Melanie and Ben are now making Purple Disco a regular event. The charity Purple Disco donated to is called Liberty Una. The event allowed Purple Disco to donate £580 which was put towards the access to a therapy scheme that provides female DV survivors access to therapy on their recovery journey.

Melanie added, “We sought to find the best representation of local musical acts in House music, bringing together legendary DJs like Bruce B, up and coming talent, GEN33, whose latest releases have been all over the digital streaming platforms."

Melanie concluded, "We are a small group of local DJs and promotors who are creating a community in Milton Keynes where we bring people together through their love of music while raising much-needed funds for those in need.”

Purple Disco aims to create a platform to not only support local charities but also to give back and create a platform for musical talent in MK to showcase what MK is all about.
