Keen knitters have donated thousands of new-born baby hats to Milton Keynes Hospital following an MKFM appeal.
Last month, MKFM caught wind of a message from the hospital's maternity department asking people to knit red hats. These tiny little hats were to be worn by premature babies, so they could be kept warm when being transferred from ward to ward.
Knowing that we were heading into Tier 4, and people would subsequently have more time on their hands, MKFM decided to write an article asking for volunteers to knit some.
This article, which was published on 22nd December, has since been shared on social media over 1,100 times.
MKFM has been inundated with messages from keen knitters wanting to get involved - we even heard from someone in Norway who wanted to help!
The generosity of the knitting community, both locally and further afield, means that Milton Keynes Hospital has received 3,000 hats.
Michelle Hancock, from the maternity department, has since thanked everybody for their help.
She said: "We are incredibly grateful to have received so many hats from members of the community to help keep our tiniest patients warm. The level of kindness shown is humbling and we have been impressed with by the amazing knitting skills that are out there!"
These hats will be put to good use, and will last the hospital quite some time. This is why they are now asking volunteers to hold onto any extra hats that they have for now.
Michelle continued: "We now have plenty of hats to keep us going for the time being so, if you have any hats that are ready, or you still want to knit some hats in the future, we would ask that you please just hold on to them for the time being, rather than sending them in at present, until we put the call out again for more hats. Once again, thank you all ever so much."
MKFM will publish an article when the hospital is seeking more red hats.
