The Milton Keynes 'castle' you probably didn't even know existed

We like to think we know a fair amount about Milton Keynes, but even we were surprised when someone told us that it has a 'castle'.

How could we have missed it after living here for all this time?

Well, the 'castle' in Milton Keynes is actually slightly - different - to what you might imagine when you think of one.

Known as Bradwell Castle Mound, it's what is known as a 'motte and bailey castle'.

And it's essentially a large mound of earth you wouldn't think twice about walking past.

Motte and bailey castles were built by the Normans between the 11th and 13th centuries.

They consisted of a large mound of rubble, known as the motte, and were then surrounded by a timber-type tower.

Historic England say they "generally occupied strategic positions dominating their immediate locality".

And Bradwell Castle has survived comparatively well compared to other motte and bailey castles across the country.

It's treated as one of the most valuable indications of life in medieval Britain, when taken together with nearby Bradwell Abbey and the church.

Bradwell Castle is located in Bradwell and has Scheduled Monument listed status, and is definitely one to visit once lockdown is over.
