Students to try new Milton Keynes sports plan

Initiative will tackle rugby decline in schools.

More children from a broader range of local schools will be able to take part in competitive rugby following the formation of a new sports partnership.

MK Alliance, a collaboration of local rugby clubs and secondary schools, is working to introduce competitive rugby to children who might otherwise feel excluded from the game.

With the aim of bridging the gap between private and state schools, the MK Alliance is developing a new generation of rugby talent while promoting inclusivity and enhancing the quality of the sport across the region.

It follows a decline in competitive rugby opportunities, particularly in secondary state schools. Changes in funding and the shift toward touch and tag rugby have left students without a chance to experience the game at a competitive level. The MK Alliance wants to change that by providing access to rugby where students can develop their skills to a top-tier competitive level.

A partnership between local clubs, including Milton Keynes RUFC, long-established Olney RFC, and secondary schools such as Shenley Brook End and Ousedale, has already made a significant impact.

Club coaches and dedicated school PE staff offer valuable training and mentorship to the students. Milton Keynes sports brand Oso has manufactured and donated innovate reversible playing shirts and assisted with the training through their brand ambassador, Alex Waller. And MK’s Sports Central has provided the use of its facilities.

The long-term goal is for MK Alliance teams to compete against private schools, creating an equal playing field for all students regardless of their background. A competitive game between MK East and MK West will take place at Sports Central tomorrow (24th January). The game will play a crucial role in selecting players for an MK Alliance team that will eventually challenge some of the region's most prestigious private schools.

“Milton Keynes Secondary Schools have faced a decade of decline in the provision of high-quality rugby competition,” says Sean Doyle, Head of PE at Shenley Brook End School. “The MK Rugby Alliance offers an important solution, providing both coaching and competition in a way that is accessible to students from all backgrounds.”

“The more we can grow the sport, the better,” adds Alex Waller, Oso Brand Ambassador and Current Premiership Champion. “We are proud to support this project and hope it will help boost local rugby at both the grassroots and competitive levels. This initiative is an important step towards ensuring that all young people in Milton Keynes have the opportunity to experience the full potential of rugby.”
