City rail station among the stops in Remembrance event.
Local dignitaries and armed forces veterans were among the invited guests at Milton Keynes Central Station as it featured on the timetable of a special rail-themed Remembrance Day event.
An Avanti West Coast special service rolled into MK’s main station last week as part of the ‘Poppy Express Train’ initiative to help honour the war dead, who are commemorated in today’s Armistice Day.
The Royal British Legion armed forces charity worked with Avanti to organise the unique train journey which started at Glasgow Central and stopped at 16 stations heading south before terminating at London’s Euston.
On board the train was an empty wreath which was presented at each station to a representative of the Armed Forces Community. At Milton Keynes station it was local veteran Samir Amadu, who placed a triple spray of poppies into the wreath as a mark of remembrance and respect.
By this point the wreath was taking shape and it was completed by the time it finally arrived in London.
MK’s Mayor Marie Bradburn, Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire Lady Howe and members of the local Armed Forces Community were all at MK Central, along with a bugler to play The Last Post and Reveille.
“I have been to lots of Remembrance events like this one over the years,” said Johanna Hrycak, MK City Council’s Armed Forces Covenant Project Manager. “But it was really important to get Milton Keynes included, so I am delighted we have been able to do that.”
