Smart motorway works near Milton Keynes to continue during COVID-19 pandemic

Highways England has written to Newport Pagnell residents to inform them that smart motorway works that had previously been postponed will now continue.

Following Government advice, Highways England has said that construction activity will continue with all sites having strict safeguarding measures.

Works will take place between J13 and J16 from next month.

Piling work that had previously been postponed has since been scheduled to take place from 12th May 2020 for approximately seven weeks (Monday to Friday only).

These works involve drilling piles into the ground, and will be carried out between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm.

A spokesperson on behalf of Highways England said: "The first part of this work will take place on the southbound carriageway and will involve installing the sheet piles using vibration to lower the piles into the ground.

"The second part of this work will take place both on the northbound and southbound carriageways and will involve installing the sheet piles using an impact hammer to lower the sheet piles into the ground, where the vibration method has previously been unable to do so.

"Please note that these timescales may be subject to change, due to circumstances outside of our control; such as adverse weather and incidents on the road.

"We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused by these works and appreciate that you may be more aware of the work if you are following government guidelines asking people to stay at home. We will do our utmost to complete the work as quickly as possible."

Residents who have additional questions or concerns have been asked to contact Highways England on 07469391190.
