Small cooking fire breaks out at Milton Keynes tower block that doesn't meet current fire safety standards

    Mellish Court

Last night, a small cooking fire broke out at Mellish Court in Bletchley - a tower block that does not meet current fire safety standards.

Mellish Court is one of the two tower blocks in the city, alongside The Gables in Wolverton, that Milton Keynes Council says does not match the standards that are expected to prevent the "risk of smoke and fire spreading between flats and floors".

The Council is currently deciding on the future of the tower blocks, with councillors saying that complete demolition is "likely", but in the meantime fire safety wardens have been introduced.

And one of these wardens last night discovered smoke from underneath one of the doors of a first-floor flat at Mellish Court.

Fire crews were called and attended the scene just before midnight. Two appliances and crews from West Ashland, one from Broughton and an officer attended. Firefighters used one hose reel and two sets of breathing apparatus while putting out the blaze.

The council has since confirmed that nobody was injured.

"Council colleagues are at Mellish Court this morning speaking with residents," a spokesperson said in a statement.

"Last week, the council implemented 24/7 wardens at the building and is working closely with Bucks Fire & Rescue Service to ensure the continued safety of all residents.

"We ask all tenants to take sensible safety precautions, such as being careful when cooking, smoking, using candles and cooperating with fire safety measures."
