Residents are being told they may have to 'prepare for some disruption to services' as the new variant could lead to the isolation of entire teams over the Christmas period.
Here in Milton Keynes, bins are collected by Serco on a weekly basis, unlike some other boroughs which may receive a fortnightly collection. Earlier this year, in the height of the Pingdemic, MK Council made the decision to suspend Green Bin, Food and Waste collections to help the workload for remaining crews.
Since returning to normal schedules in August, there has been disruption to some services and some collections have had to be made a day late.
With the new variant set to have a higher transmission rate, and contacts of Omicron positive people having to isolate, we askede the Leader of the Council what we should expect.
Cllr Peter Marland told MKFM that the council will do the best they can in keeping bin collections as normal as possible.
The Leader of Milton Keynes Council, Peter Marland, told MKFM: "There is a greater danger with Omicron it looks like and the more open we are, the more likely it is that whole teams might go off this time as opposed to isolating individuals.
"To put it frankly, if Tottenham Hotspurs game on the weekend can't go ahead, if billion pound football clubs with all the protection and isolation they have on, can't get a match on, then I think people may have to prepare for some disruption to services. But we will do the best we can."
"It is often lower down in peoples minds, just the breadth of what councils do. We may be a day late, but it will be collected. If we can't get people out of hospitals, then that would have a real impact."
Over the Christmas period, there will be a number of changes to bin collection days over the Christmas and New Year period in Milton Keynes.
Residents are being asked to ensure they only put their rubbish out on their revised collection date. You can check the revised dates below.
