Residents donate over £20,000 to save popular Milton Keynes music venue

Hundreds of people have donated money to save The Stables, a popular music venue in Wavendon, with the total passing £20,000 so far.

This is part of a campaign, called Save Our Venues, which has been launched as part of a national initiative by the Music Venue Trust to prevent the closure of independent music venues.

It has been reported that the pandemic has “wiped out at least £900 million of the £1.1 billion that live music was expected to contribute to the UK economy in 2020.”

And since no artists are performing live shows, and in turn no customers buying tickets, music venues have had to take fundraising into their own hands.

This is why The Stables has launched a crowdfunding page to raise money to keep it open. They have set a £30,000 target and are well on the way to reach it, having raised £20,146 so far (as of 9/10).

The money raised will cover essential costs to maintain a skeleton staff that can reschedule and promote shows, deal with customer enquiries, maintain facilities, and also plan for the future.

The fundraiser comes as The Stables, which is a registered charity, is celebrating its 50th birthday this year.

A spokesperson said: "We are also acutely aware that many other venues across the country are in difficulty and that without help now the national network that enables artists to tour and develop their fan base may disappear. So, if we hit our target, and we can help prevent the closure of our venue, everything above the amount we raise will be donated to the Music Venue Trust GMV Crisis Fund to protect other venues just like ours, right across the country."
