Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen finished P2 at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix after being handed a five-second penalty on lap one.

At the start of the race, Piastri caught Verstappen in turn one, and the Dutchman went over the corner to regain his place at the front of the pack. This action was assessed a five-second penalty.

He took the penalty during his one pit stop, which saw him drop behind Piastri in net position and face the daunting task of chasing down the fastest car on the grid.

Despite the setback, Verstappen was able to climb the grid comfortably and finished just 2.8 seconds behind the Australian, who claimed his third victory of the season.

It was a positive result for the four-time World Champion, who entered the weekend looking for performance from his car after a disappointing weekend in Bahrain, where he finished P6.

The result sees Verstappen close the gap on McLaren's Lando Norris in the Drivers' Standings, with the gap to the leader (now Piastri) increasing to 12.

After the race, Verstappen kept his media comments short and to the point.

He said: "I just want to say a big thank you to the fans here in Jeddah. It's been a great weekend, I love the track, and the rest is what it is."

"I'm looking forward to Miami, so we'll see you there."

It was a disappointing day, however, for Verstappen's teammate Yuki Tsunoda. The 24-year-old Japanese driver suffered a crash on the opening lap, colliding with Alpine's Pierre Gasly, a former teammate of his at AlphaTauri (now-named Racing Bulls), which saw both cars damaged enough to force them to DNF.

Starting P8, Tsunoda had been hoping to claim points in back-to-back races for Red Bull but had his night cut short.

He will now look to return to Milton Keynes this week for some simulator sessions and a Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) session at Silverstone, where he will drive the dominant RB19 from 2023 to continue his adjustment and learning at his new team.
