Polls close as Milton Keynes Council is one to watch in local elections fight

Polling stations across Milton Keynes have just closed, as both Conservatives and Labour battle to take control of the current 'no overall control' Milton Keynes Council.

The Council is currently made up of 22 Labour, 22 Conservative and 12 Liberal Democrat councillors. There is also one vacant seat in Newport Pagnell South, where a by-election has been held today in addition to the regular vote.

Each of the 19 wards have been electing one local councillor today (with two in Newport Pagnell South) and they will join the 37 councillors who have seats which are not up for election this time around.

Of the 20 seats being elected, 4 are currently held by the Conservatives, 9 by Labour and 7 by the Liberal Democrats.

It means the Conservatives would need to gain either 7 seats from the Liberal Democrats or 4 from Labour (or a mix of these) in order to gain overall control of the Council.

Meanwhile, Labour would need to gain either 7 seats from the Liberal Democrats or 4 from the Conservatives (or a mix of these) in order to gain overall control of the Council.

It is not arithmetically possible for either the Liberal Democrats or another party to gain control of the Council this year.

However, if neither Labour nor the Conservatives are able to make enough gains to have overall control then another deal will need to be done to keep one party in power.

In 2016, the Liberal Democrats agreed to support Labour in running the Council on a two year arrangement.

The results are set to be announced tomorrow afternoon, with live updates on MKFM.
