Thames Valley Police (TVP) has been announced as a finalist in two categories within this year’s Menopause Friendly Awards; Most Open Workplace of the Year Award category and Menopause Friendly Employer of The Year category.
TVP took a proactive approach towards establishing menopause support and in 2022 were the first police force in England and Wales to become an accredited menopause friendly employer.
The organisation has more women joining the service than ever before, with women representing 48% of its workforce and 38% of its Police Officers. Strong policies and support around menopause now complement a wide range of maternity, paternity and wellbeing initiatives.
Chief Constable Jason Hogg applauds news of the announcement, “Last year TVP was a proud recipient of the Most Open Workplace of the Year Award, and the fact that we’ve been nominated in this category for a second-year running is testament to the ongoing importance of work in this area. We are also delighted to stand alongside other high-profile organisations who have been nominated for the Menopause Friendly Employer of the Year award. We strive to improve every day and will continue to enhance our practices, procedures and education around the impact of menopause.”
The Menopause Friendly Employer of the Year category focuses on organisations embedding a menopause friendly culture in their workplace. A wealth of good practice demonstrated creativity, inclusivity and organisation-wide commitment including policies, training programmes, support networks, champions, advocates and peer-to-peer engagement. TVP say they are proud to sit alongside other finalists in this category including BAE Systems, HSBC UK / first direct / M&S Bank and Unilever UK & Ireland.
The Most Open Workplace of the Year category includes a wide variety of employers who were able to document how they have developed a culture of openness around menopause. This year, TVP are proud to sit along other finalists in this category including Aramark, Bristol Myers Squibb, Mott MacDonald and Santander.
The Menopause Friendly Employer Awards celebrate and recognise excellence among organisations and individuals going above and beyond to support menopause in the workplace. Award winners will be announced at the Menopause Friendly Employer Awards on Thursday September 14, 2023.
Organised by Henpicked: Menopause in the Workplace, the Menopause Friendly Employer Awards is also an important fundraiser, aiming to raise £100,000 for a range of menopause-related charities, programmes and research.
The Menopause Friendly Employer Awards were judged by the Menopause Friendly Independent Panel who were looking particularly for the impact achieved within the workplace.
“The standard of this year’s Awards entries has been phenomenal – employers have significantly raised the bar in terms of their creativity, innovative approach and, importantly, making a positive impact in their workplace,” says Deborah Garlick, CEO of Henpicked: Menopause in The Workplace. “The Independent Panel had such a tough job selecting the finalists from a strong field of entrants – they even had to take the judging into a second day, due to the high number of entries and the extraordinary level of detail they were given to assess.
“I congratulate all our finalists: you really are the best of the best. And my thanks go to everyone for their complete commitment to being menopause friendly. There is remarkable work being undertaken by employers and individuals whose dedication is changing hearts and minds to improve people’s lived experience of menopause in the workplace.”
