Police force Milton Keynes nightclub to close for planned New Year's Eve event

Police are issuing a closure notice to a nightclub in Milton Keynes ahead of a planned New Year's Eve event.

The notice has been issued to the Onyx nightclub on Queensway in Bletchley today.

In a statement, Superintendent Bruce Riddell from Thames Valley Police said: “We will be issuing a closure notice on Onyx nightclub in Queensway, Bletchley.

“This is due to a planned New Year's Eve event at the venue which posed a significant risk of disorder and disruption to local residents.

“The event has been advertised nationally and it is understood people may be travelling long distances to attend, including from the Brixton area, so please do not travel to the venue as it will be closed.

“The notice will be in place from 6pm tonight (30/12) until 6pm on Sunday (1/1) to ensure no New Year's Eve events take place at the venue.

“Please do not travel to Bletchley for this event. We will be monitoring the area and anyone breaching or attempting to breach the closure notice may be arrested and prosecuted.

“Please share this message with anyone you know who was planning on going.”

Police say they have tried to work with the licence holder, event organiser and Milton Keynes City Council to mitigate the risks posed by this event.

However, "the force believe that the risk of disorder has not been sufficiently planned for or mitigated" and so have issued a closure notice on the premises.

Thames Valley Police say their neighbourhood and licensing teams will continue to work with the venue in the New Year around event planning and safety arrangements.
