Plans to replace the empty Milton Keynes Theatre multi-storey car park have been approved.
A decision has been made to approve a city centre prospectus outlining various options for the development of the empty theatre car park site.
The draft development brief suggests MKC hopes to see an eco-friendly, mixed-use, world-class development at the meeting point of CMK and Campbell Park.
The vision statement reads: "“To create an exceptional mixed use development that capitalises on its outstanding gateway location that affords stunning views over Campbell Park and beyond and is positioned adjacent to the most popular theatre outside London, an acclaimed and recently expanded MK Art Gallery and complementary uses.”
Concerns were also raised over replacement building heights. “It is the officer view that the site is appropriate for a taller building than the existing car park structure,” the council said.
However, any building taller than eight storeys will be assessed against planning policy.
“The brief makes it clear that a placemaking-led mixed-use scheme is required that prioritises community, leisure and/or culture on lower floors,” a document states. “The brief furthermore does not propose a residential-led development.”
