Newport Pagnell home creates memory tree for residents and staff

A Newport Pagnell home has created a memory tree containing individual messages with things residents and staff members enjoy.

Staff at MHA Westbury Grange have decorated the reception area at the home with the tree.

The tree contains the names of every resident and staff member at the home and next to their name there is a leaf which contains a personalised message, which can range from something they like to eat or a hobby they have.

MHA Westbury Grange provides residential dementia and general nursing care for 45 residents.

This idea came off the back of a workshop attended by the home manager Julie Roche and activities coordinator Sophie Steward.

Julie said: ”The tree has been great in getting everyone involved and the messages are individual to all of us.

“The staff, families and residents are all enjoying adding leaves with little messages on.

“We have had some lovely feedback from residents and their family members who have said they find the tree very comforting.

“For some of our residents living with dementia it helps with tips on calming them down and makes you aware of what works for them.

“The tree welcomes you in as you walk into the home, so we have had people take great interest in it.

“It's a conversation starter and works well as an ice breaker.

“It's filling up nicely and the aim is to keep it going and continue with adding messages for new residents and staff members.”
