New safety zone pilot scheme launches in Milton Keynes

School Streets is an approach where streets are closed to motor traffic at the start and end of the school day.

Milton Keynes Council has launched a brand new scheme in a bid to reduce congestion and air pollution, making it easier and safer to walk or cycle to school.

Every school within the Borough was considered for the pilot, Milton Keynes Council has considered a few factors when selecting the schools to pilot this scheme, such as road classification and bus routes.

Yesterday (31/1), the first school saw streets surrounding it close during high traffic hours. St George’s Road, by Chestnuts Primary School, is now restricted from St Clements Drive to St Patrick’s Way between 8.15am – 8.55am and 2.45pm – 3.30pm.

At Cold Harbour C of E School, restrictions will begin on 14 February 2022 on Highland Close up to the junction of Kincardine Drive, the roads will be closed between 8.20am – 9am and 2.45pm – 3.30pm.

Original plans to include The Premier Academy have had to be paused due to planning restrictions on the access gate on Tiffany Close. MK Council is currently working with the school to resolve this, with plans for the school to be involved in the future.
