New Mayor of Milton Keynes launches year of cycling with CMK Flower Ride

Last night (15/05) at Milton Keynes City Council's Civic Offices, MK’s new Mayor Marie Bradburn launched a ‘Year of Cycling’. This afternoon she will lead a critical mass cycle ride through CMK.

Cyclists will adorn themselves in flowers to celebrate with a spring theme.

The ride will be slow and easy, leaving Station Square soon after 5.30pm for a 20-minute journey to Campbell Park and back.

The Mayor says, “As well as being environmentally sustainable and good for our health, cycling is fun. I’m planning to cycle to as many civic appointments as I can this year. I want to encourage more children to cycle to school and more women to cycle too.  I feel like I am an ordinary person who has discovered the benefits of cycling, which I do whenever I can, and want others to enjoy it too.”

The results of a recent survey will be shared at the cycle ride, showing women feel less safe cycling on the Redways than men. The results of a schools travel survey will also be shared, showing nearly 1,100 Year 7 children are driven less than two miles to school.

Cllr Jenny Wilson-Marklew, Cabinet Member for Public Realm, will talk about plans for increasing the number of women and children cycling on the Redways. Cllr Shanika Mahendran, Cabinet Member for Economy, Sustainability, and Innovation, will talk about other ways the Council plan to support the Mayor’s Year of Cycling.

All adults and children are welcome to join the Mayor’s fun ride through CMK, details here.
