The project aims to stop young people in Milton Keynes from being drawn into knife crime.

Last year, Milton Keynes Council allocated £100,000 to support local projects targeted at stopping young people in Milton Keynes from being drawn into knife crime.

MK Council gave the Safety Centre £40,000 to help deliver its newest interactive learning zone at Hazard Alley, which simulates a typical British high street, along with an additional £10,600 from the Safer MK partnership.

Knife crime has increased in Milton Keynes over the past few years, in line with national trends, and the city has seen several murders in this time.

Cllr Lauren Townsend, Cabinet Member for Community Safety at MK Council said: “I was delighted to have a sneak preview of Hazard Alley’s newest learning zone recently, and it looks fantastic.  As someone who grew up in MK and visited the Safety Centre during my childhood, I know just how much of an important asset the centre is to children and young people in Milton Keynes.  We’re committed to doing all we can to stop knife crime in MK, and our work with local partners through projects and initiatives just like this are vital in helping us do that.”

The Safety Centre Hazard Alley was the first interactive learning centre of its kind in the world and delivers safety education to thousands of children and young people throughout Milton Keynes and the surrounding area every year.

Maya Joseph-Hussain, CEO of the Safety Centre said: “We’re so grateful for the support that the Council and Safer MK partnership has been able to provide to help us deliver this project.  It’s a really exciting new addition for us and will add to the value of the learning experiences we can provide for young people in our city.”

Hazard Alley is now taking group bookings for the new school year, ahead of an official opening ceremony to launch the new scenario in September.
