Anyone can apply for a slow-down zone if it improves safety.
Milton Keynes City Council is proposing to introduce new 20mph speed limit zones on roads in five areas across the region after requests from local communities. And more could be on their way if residents request them.
Parts of Caldecotte, Newport Pagnell, Oxley Park, Woburn Sands and Woolstone have been earmarked as new zones where the 20 limits could be brought in.
The City Council has published details of the proposals on its website and is inviting local people to comment by 20th February. All comments received will be reviewed and, if the zones are widely supported, the new speed limits could be put in place later this year.
Any local parish, town or community council may apply for a 20mph zone to help improve road safety in their area if the streets noted meet criteria, which include:
- Being located within a built-up area where vehicles and pedestrians will mix
- There's an existing speed limit of 40mph or under
- Evidence of being supported by the local community through a petition
“These speed limit reductions have been proactively requested by the local communities themselves,” said Councillor Akash Nayee, interim Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation.
“We always listen and where possible, support safety measures that are asked for. Local people who feel a 20mph speed limit would make roads in their community safer should contact their local parish, town or community council to start an application”.
