MK Dons announce signing of Tom McGill

MK Dons have announced the signing of 24-year-old goalkeeper, Tom McGill, has been completed, joining on a season-long loan from Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

The 'keeper becomes MK Dons' tenth signing of the summer, subject to league and FA clearance, following Connor Lemonheigh-Evans, Luke Offord, Laurence Maguire, Tommy Leigh, Sam Sherring, Joe Pritchard, Liam Kelly, Tom Carroll and Callum Hendry.

McGill moves to Stadium MK having just returned from the Copa America with Canada, with the shot-stopper a member of the squad who made it to the semi-finals of the international competition.

The goalkeeper has spent the entirety of his career with Brighton and Hove Albion, joining the Seagull's academy as a 14-year-old in 2014.

While progressing through Brighton's youth system McGill enjoyed serval loan spells away from the Amex, including with Worthing, Greenwich Borough and Basingstoke Town.

In January 2020, he joined League Two side Crawley Town on loan, before returning to the Broadfield on a season-long loan at the beginning of the 2020/21 season.

McGill made his professional debut and football league debut with the Reds before being recalled by Brighton in January 2021 after a serious head injury.

Since returning to East Sussex the young 'keeper has featured regularly for Brighton's U21s, and has also been named on the bench in the Premier League and the Europa League with the senior team.

On signing for MK Dons, McGill said, "It was an easy decision for me after a couple of conversations with the gaffer, I got told you can play with freedom, within the realms of what we're trying to do here, and that's all any player wants to hear really!"

On what he wants to achieve at Stadium MK, McGill said, "For me, having a run of games, having the freedom to play under a gaffer that plays a similar style to what I'm used to, that's all I'm after, winning and success with a team that deserves it I think."

On signing McGill for the season, Mike Williamson said, "We ask a lot of our goalkeepers, and that'll be no different for Tom. He's a bright, energetic player who we're confident has the footballing intelligence to excel in our system. Brighton have done a fantastic job with his development, now it's up to us to get the best out of him."
