Milton Keynes urged to join in national rubbish campaign

City council encourages residents to join local litter picks.

Milton Keynes City Council is asking local people to get involved in the Great British Spring Clean this month and is making litter picking kits available to residents to help them ‘spruce up’ their area.

The council has pledged its support for this year’s Spring Clean campaign, led by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, which runs from 21st March to 6th April.

The litter picking sets are available to borrow from the council’s partners in the community, such as parish councils and resident associations. They contain high visibility vests, litter picks and gloves available for both adults and children. You can find your local collection point here

Keeping the city clean, which includes dealing with litter, fly tipping and other environmental mess, costs the council an average of £5 million a year. Taking part in this initiative helps to make a huge difference to the environment, says the council, over and above the work of its environmental teams.

In a YouGov survey carried out for Keep Britain Tidy, more than four million people in our region said ‘litter-free’ streets would help them love where they live.

“We work hard to keep MK clean and appreciate local people taking part in helping and to take pride in where they live,” said Cllr Akash Nayee, Interim Cabinet Member for the Public Realm.

“To make it easier, we’re offering people the opportunity to borrow litter pick kits free of charge.”
