Alcohol-related anti-social behaviour curbed in city centre.
A designated security team has been given authority to stamp out city centre ‘street drinking’ and anti-social behaviour in Milton Keynes.
The MyMiltonKeynes Business Improvement District’s (BID) private security team, called My Local Bobby, has been granted delegated authority to enforce the Alcohol Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) within the city centre.
The development empowers the team to address alcohol-related anti-social behaviour more effectively, enhancing public safety in the area. The Alcohol PSPO prohibits drinking alcohol in designated public spaces when instructed not to by an authorised officer. It also makes it mandatory to hand over the alcohol on request. Non-compliance can result in a £100 Fixed Penalty Notice or prosecution with a maximum fine of £500.
Jill Farnsworth, Chief Executive of MyMiltonKeynes, welcomed the council's decision to delegate these powers as a vital step in fulfilling the BID's Refreshed Business Plan 2024-27, which prioritises tackling low-level crime and improving public safety.
“This delegation is a game-changer for us," said Jill Farnsworth. "In the past, our security team could only report issues, but now they have the authority to act. This gives our Bobbies real teeth to deal with street drinkers who do gather in areas of the city centre – particularly during the warmer months – and often cause anti-social behaviour that disrupts businesses and the public.
“This new responsibility is directly in line with our commitment to becoming more hands-on in addressing issues. Instead of simply escalating problems to the authorities, we are now part of the solution, dealing with these matters swiftly and effectively to improve the experience of everyone in Milton Keynes City Centre.”
“We've been working with MyMiltonKeynes as part of the START Taskforce, which aims to reduce anti-social behaviour and other offences,” added Councillor Amber McQuillan, Cabinet Member for Community Safety at Milton Keynes City Council.
“Sharing these powers means more opportunities to address anti-social behaviour on the spot, which is good for everyone. We'll keep working with partners on more ways to make MK an even safer and more pleasant place.”
The My Local Bobby officers, who are funded by City Centre businesses, began their roles in July 2024. Their presence helps deter anti-social behaviour while supporting businesses with on-the-ground responses to issues such as shoplifting, nuisance behaviour, and street drinking. The officers will continue to liaise with Thames Valley Police as needed to ensure serious incidents are escalated appropriately.
This initiative is part of MyMiltonKeynes BID’s broader strategy to manage the public realm, promote the city centre, support businesses, and shape the future of Milton Keynes. The Refreshed Business Plan 2024-27 outlines these objectives, focusing on making the city centre a vibrant, safe, and attractive destination.
