Milton Keynes school children create mosaic masterpiece

Sarah is working with approximately 700 children on this project, as they design and make a huge mosaic mural for the Blue Light Hub.

Sarah Harper of Honey Mosaics is working in partnership with the emergency services on a creative community project proudly working with Charles Warren Academy, Langland Community School, Greenleys Junior School and children in connection with Harrys Rainbow.

Each school has had multiple visits from the emergency services, allowing the firefighters, Police and Paramedics to spend time with the children telling them about their job roles and allowing the children to ask lots of questions. Children have really enjoyed seeing all the vehicles, trying on kit and learning lots of interesting facts about the emergency services. The visits to the schools have been engaging, interactive and educational.

Sarah has taken a illustration artist to each school where she and the artist have supported children with creating an entry for the design competition, to have their artwork picked to feature in the mosaic. Illustrations were all judged at the Blue Light Hub by staff, and Sarah then used 27 of the children’s illustrations within the design.

Each and every child at each school has had the chance to add tiles to the mosaic whilst learning about the craft and helping to create the inspiring mural. There have even been visits from the emergency service workers during the make of the mosaic, which has been a wonderful experience for all involved.

The project work hopes  to build and enhance community relationships, letting the children meet positive community role models whilst all the children have the chance to contribute to making a piece of public art . Every child is getting the opportunity to feel proud and understand the value of collaboration as  they work together to make one mural with other community groups within Milton Keynes.

MAKE, Milton Keynes Cultural Educational Partnership, will use this project as a case study in their toolkit of cultural diversity resources. It should provide inspiration and guidance for other schools wanting to engage with local artists.

This project is supported by funding from Milton Keynes Community Foundation, Thames Valley Police and Buckinghamshire Fire Service.
