Milton Keynes pupils remember local war heroes

Children from Knowles Primary School finish project with Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Key stage 2 pupils from Knowles Primary School in Fenny Stratford have completed an important project that remembers local men and women who died in service during World War 1 and 2.

The 7 to 11 year old children have been working with Mike Chapman, a speaker and volunteer with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, to honour the 24 men and women heroes who lived in Bletchley and whose graves are sited at the town’s Manor Road Cemetery.

The children are part of the school's ‘Big Hearts Leaders’, who complete weekly volunteering projects in the community to help give back to others and run fundraising projects to support local charities. For this latest project the pupils created memorial stones then visited the cemetery to place them on the graves. It coincides with next month's Remembrance Sunday commemoration.

“The children were very reflective and spent time thinking about the sacrifices that others have made to protect their country,” said Sophie Simpson, Deputy Headteacher. “They were respectful and represented the school well.

“The community will be able to see the stones as they pass through the cemetery and have time to reflect and remember at this important time of year.”

Now the Big Hearts Leaders are looking forward to organising their next project: creating heart shaped prayers or inspiring words to be placed on the railings of Queensway Methodist church to share hope and positivity with the local community.
