A local mum has decided to raise money for Syrian refugees, by living off the same rations that they do.
Rhian Evans, who lives in Milton Keynes, is just over halfway through the Ration Challenge, which sees her eat mainly rice for her daily meals, with lentils, dried chickpeas and tiny amounts of protein and flour for 7 days.
Her diet is the same as a refugee living in a camp in Jordan.
The local mum has decided to do this challenge to raise awareness, while also raising funds for refugees that need emergency food, healthcare and life-saving support.
"As a mum, I often wonder if I'm feeding my children the right things," says Rhian, "but there are mums in refugee camps who aren't as lucky as me, and the mums don't have all the food that we do."
It costs just £14 to feed a refugee for one month, and £165 will feed that same refugee for an entire year.
Rhian has raised £1,233.94 so far (as of 11:30 on 16/6), which could effectively feed seven refugees for a year. The money will also go towards funding medical treatment and providing COVID-19 kits for families to ensure they are protected from the virus.
Because Rhian has hit multiple fundraising milestones, she has been able to add salt to her rations, a tin of tomatoes, spices, one vegetable, some milk and enjoy a well-earned cup of tea when she reached the £850 mark.
Rhian was impressed at how far a single tea bag could go, as it produced just under one pint of tea when infused in some water.
She will soon be completing the challenge and hopes by the end of it that she would have raised awareness about what refugees have to go through on a daily basis.
Rhian also hopes that more local people will sign up for the Ration Challenge, which takes place every year.
