As Milton Keynes bids to be made a city in celebration of HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the Mayor of Milton Keynes has teamed up with baking experts at MK College on a pudding fit for royalty.
The Mayor’s Coffee Hall and Walnut Tree sponge was created to inspire local schoolchildren to come up with a Platinum Pudding ahead of formal Jubilee celebrations on the weekend of 5th June, when communities across the UK will be holding street parties and other events.
Mayor Khan is asking MK pupils to design a pudding for the Jubilee and send in photos or drawings of their ideas.
He is hoping some of the pudding recipes will have a Milton Keynes connection, drawing on local place names, landmarks and historic features to mark MK’s bid to be made a city by The Queen.
A national competition to create a pudding for HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is also running, judged by baking experts led by Dame Mary Berry. The Queen will be served the winning pudding at a formal Jubilee event.
Mayor Khan was assisted by MK College chefs James Carr and Nico Baker to create the Coffee Hall and Walnut Tree sponge, a classic flavour combination also chosen for the names of two MK neighbourhoods.
Coffee Hall was one of the first estates built in Milton Keynes and Walnut Tree was named after Walnut Tree Farm, on whose land it was built.

Mayor of MK, Cllr Mohammed Khan, said; “We wanted to celebrate Her Majesty’s Jubilee and remind everyone that MK is in the running to be made a Platinum Jubilee City. We have all the ingredients of a great city and a really rich heritage to draw from in Milton Keynes – the proof is in the pudding!”
Pictures of cakes and drawings must be submitted on email to mayorsoffice@milton-keynes.gov.uk by 5pm, Friday 20 May.
