A man has been convicted of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility in Milton Keynes, following an investigation by Thames Valley Police.
Jay Lupton, 25, of Fen Street, pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility, at Luton Crown Court yesterday.
Lupton killed 48-year-old Calvin Olawale Babatunde from Milton Keynes last year.
Thames Valley Police were called by South Central Ambulance Service on 25th January last year to report that a man had been found stabbed in a building in Fen Street.
Despite the best efforts of paramedics, Calvin was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Firstly I’d like to pay tribute to Calvin’s family who have shown the utmost dignity throughout this terrible time for them, losing a loved one in such a brutal attack,” said senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector Alice Broad of the Major Crime Unit.
“Calvin Olawale Babatunde and Jay Lupton were neighbours in Fen Street and had become friends while they were living there, although this friendship had deteriorated in the months leading to Calvin’s death.
“On the evening of 25th January 2024, Lupton went to Calvin’s property and without provocation attacked him with a knife. Lupton was captured on CCTV leaving the scene on foot, later going to the house of a relative, who was not aware he had just carried out the brutal attack.
“Later that evening, Lupton returned to the cordon that had been put in place by the Police, where he was arrested. During searches of the scene, the investigation team found a knife in Calvin’s flat, which was later examined and found to have Lupton’s DNA on it.
“Following a thorough investigation by our Major Crime Unit, Lupton was charged with the offence of murder, four days after Calvin was killed. At court a plea was entered by Lupton of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility, which was accepted by the court and the prosecution.
“Calvin was killed in the place he should have felt safest, his home, and by Lupton, who he had supported and helped while they were both living in Fen Street."
Lupton is due to be sentenced on 28th February.
