As the UK moves towards enacting Martyn’s Law, Milton Keynes City Centre is taking proactive steps to ensure businesses are prepared for any emergency.
With security and crisis resilience becoming a top priority for organisations of all sizes, MyMiltonKeynes (My-MK) is bringing together industry experts, law enforcement, and local businesses for a Business Breakfast at Unity Place—a pivotal event designed to help businesses understand protective security, improve their response to the risk of terrorism and help save lives.
Set against the backdrop of an evolving security landscape, this event will position Milton Keynes as a City that doesn’t wait for legislation to dictate action—it leads by example. Businesses in retail, hospitality, and office sectors will gain first-hand insights from Counter Terrorism Policing, who will outline practical security measures and what organisations need to know about Martyn’s Law right now.
Meanwhile, Professor Sir Keith Porter, a leading expert in clinical traumatology and co-founder of CitizenAid, will outline why structured decision-making is crucial in the first moments of an incident and explaining how businesses can access low or no cost advice, training and equipment which can help save lives. For Sir Keith, ‘Run, Hide, Tell’ is no longer enough, the message must be extended to ‘Run, Hide, Tell and when it’s safe to Treat’.
Attendees will gain insight into Project Servator, a proactive policing tactic designed to disrupt criminal activity, including terrorism. The session will highlight how businesses, partners, and the public can work together to report suspicious activity and enhance safety. Additionally, representatives from other organisations, including the City Council and centre:mk will share their strategies for emergency preparedness.
This event goes beyond theory. Milton Keynes businesses will have direct access to specialist organisations providing free or low-cost training, security guidance, and crisis response tools, ensuring that being prepared doesn’t have to mean significant expense. Representatives from Thames Valley Police, Safer MK, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner will be on hand to offer tailored support, making it easier than ever for businesses to implement practical, cost-effective resilience strategies.
“We want Milton Keynes to be ready to respond in the event of an emergency,” says Jill Farnsworth, My-MK CEO “It is essential businesses have the knowledge, resources, and confidence to handle emergencies effectively. This event is about empowering organisations to take action before they are required to—ensuring they are not just compliant, but truly prepared.”
The My-MK Business Breakfast will take place at Unity Place on Thursday 27th March, offering businesses the chance to network, learn, and take practical steps towards resilience. Attendance is free, but spaces are limited, so early registration is advised. For more information and to register visit https://www.mymiltonkeynes.co.uk/ready-to-respond-mk
