Milton Keynes Council has been shortlisted in this year’s Local Government Chronicle Awards for its role in supporting the local economy.
During the pandemic, Milton Keynes Council put together an Economic Recovery Plan worth over £3m, which has since supported 900 businesses and 2,350 residents.
Some of the economic support measures include:
- The Diamond Resilience Programme, which provides specialist support and training to 100 small and medium size businesses on how to bounce back after COVID.
- The Council’s partnership with the Love Local Hub in centre:MK which provides support to 100 female entrepreneurs - the Hub has already made over £340,000 worth of sales.
- A Council partnership with MK ACT, a charity that helps people escape domestic violence, to support 100 women regain economic independence.
Councillor Robin Bradburn, Cabinet Member for Economy, Recovery and Renewal, said: “In Milton Keynes we have such an innovative and prosperous business community, and I’m proud that as a Council we were able to help them.
"They do so much for our local economy, and it is only right that we increased our support when things got tough.”
“In particular, the Economic Development Team at Milton Keynes Council have worked tirelessly to support our local businesses, and I’m thrilled that their hard work is being recognised nationally.”
Leader of the Council Pete Marland added: “Our economy is now ranked as one of the most resilient in the country, and this wouldn’t have been possible without strong local businesses helping to deliver a prosperous, green and fair recovery from the pandemic.”
