Milton Keynes Council’s Care and Response team reports busiest ever October

The Council's Care and Response team has reported a record demand for the support service.

The team helps thousands of local people stay independent in their own homes and they answered more than 20,000 calls from MK people in need.

Helen Butler, Care and Response Manager said: “We work around the clock, 365 days a year and have been busier than ever during the pandemic. The majority of people we help are older residents and we can be the only person they’ve spoken to for a while.

"A bit of reassurance that they’re not alone goes a long way. Someone who had been feeling isolated and upset can feel a lot better after they’ve had a chat with us.”

As well as giving advice and reassurance over the phone, they’re often called on to alert emergency services, contact a family member, or visit a caller at home if they’ve had a fall or other difficulties.

The team also provides ‘peace of mind’ equipment including alarm units, personal pendants, fall sensors, medication reminders, and bogus caller buttons.

Cllr Emily Darlington, Cabinet Member responsible for Adults, Housing and Healthy Communities said: “This caring and fabulous team is helping people live independently for longer.

"They support residents to have the confidence to stay in their own homes, knowing the council team is always on hand if needed.  I’ve spent time in the control room and have seen first-hand what a difference they make and the amazing relationship they have with our residents.”
