Milton Keynes Council Cabinet announced as Labour and Lib Dems form 'progressive alliance'

Milton Keynes Council's decision-making Cabinet has been announced today (19/5) following news that Labour and Lib Dem have joined forces to run the council.

During May's local elections, the Conservative Group became the largest party but Labour and the Lib Dems together held the most amount of seats.

Following lengthy discussions, it was decided that the two groups would form a 'Progressive Alliance' to run a majority administration on the Council.

Labour Councillor Pete Marland remains Leader of the Council, with Liberal Democrat Councillor Robin Bradburn the new Deputy Leader.

Councillor Emily Darlington (Labour) takes on Adults, Housing and Healthy Communities, while Councillor Rob Middleton (Labour) stays with Resources.

Councillor Lauren Townsend (Labour) moves to Public Realm, and Councillor Zoe Nolan (Labour) stays with Children and Families.

Councillor Jane Carr (Lib Dem) takes on the new portfolio of Tackling Inequalities and Child Poverty.

Councillor Jenny Wilson-Marklew (Labour) holds Climate and Sustainability, while Councillor Paul Trendall (Lib Dem) takes on Customer Services.

Leader of Milton Keynes Council, Councillor Pete Marland, said: “This is a diverse, talented and knowledgeable Cabinet. Together we have a wealth of experience and will be able to deliver for the people of Milton Keynes.”

Deputy Leader of Milton Keynes Council, Liberal Democrat Councillor Robin Bradburn, added: “As we recover from the pandemic, it is more important than ever to stand side by side, and this Cabinet embodies that attitude. We are working together to make sure that our city has a prosperous, green and fair recovery.

“I’m particularly excited about the new portfolio for Tackling Inequalities and Child Poverty. The Liberal Democrats have always been passionate about this and now, with a dedicated portfolio, we can get to work on what we promised in our manifesto – working to reduce child poverty in our city.”

The Cabinet will be formally appointed at a full meeting of the Council this evening.
