Community projects and charities benefit from college help day.
Learners and staff from Milton Keynes College volunteered in a range of community projects across Milton Keynes today.
It was the third annual College in the Community Day, which aimed to get staff and students out and across MK to learn more about their local communities, and support charities and community groups doing amazing things in the city.
The projects included skills-based activities such as hair, beauty and barbering students offering residents at YMCA Milton Keynes free haircuts and mini manicures, and care professions students running sessions on baking, woodworking and crafts at Moorland Primary School.
Other more general activities included litter picking for the Parks Trust and supporting social enterprise the Urb Farm in Wolverton with preparing its garden for spring.
In 2024, the College Group’s College in the Community Day engaged more than 900 volunteer staff and students at over 40 projects, and Rebecca Myrie, the Head of Community Engagement at the Group, is confident that this year’s community day will be just as impactful.
“Our College in the Community Day has become a key part of how we support our local communities,” she said. “We’re always very proud of how our learners and staff get involved and show enthusiasm, hard work and commitment in supporting charities and community groups who do vital work in our communities.
“This year’s projects offer our staff and students a wide range of opportunities to develop their skills and gain a greater understanding of the issues that affect those in and around our home city."
“Our College in the Community Day is driven by our mission to deliver Fairer Futures for All, whether that’s our learners, staff, employer partners or local communities,” added Sally Alexander, CEO and Group Principal at MK College Group. “We can’t wait to see the fantastic things that our staff and learners get up to on the day!”
