Milton Keynes City Council to help low-income families save up to £400 in bills with energy improvement programme

Milton Keynes City Council is set to implement its ambitious £65M programme to improve the energy performance of council homes in the city.

Plans have been laid out by Milton Keynes City Council to take action on over 1,600 council homes, making them more energy efficient.

Works will target the worst energy performing council homes and see them undergo works such as full fabrics replacements, including doors, windows and cladding. The improvement works would take council homes to an Energy Performance Certification of C or above, saving up to £400 per year in energy bills for those living there.

If approved, the programme, which is funded by the HRA including £22.7M of SHDF wave 2.1 grant, is due to be completed in Autumn 2025 and includes Council homes in Netherfield, Bradville, Tinkers Bridge and The Lakes Estate, as well as wider properties across the city.

Cllr Ed Hume, Cabinet member for Housing said, “Our ambitious £65M programme to improve the energy performance of over 1,600 of our Council homes in the city will improve over 30% of our energy inefficient homes to an EPC grade C.”

Cllr Hume added, “Labour Milton Keynes is taking critical action to mitigate the impact of the cost-of-living crisis by insulating more homes to cut energy bills for low-income families. We are nearly replacing the whole home in some instances; the roofs, windows, doors and the external walls, saving over £400 per year in energy bills in the process.”

“Whilst keeping our low-income families warm in the winter, these works will also keep them cooler in the Summer”, Cllr Hume concluded.
