Milton Keynes assistant ref charged with child sex offence

Match official currently suspended from football.

An assistant referee from Milton Keynes will appear in court charged with a child sex offence.

Gareth Viccars, 46, who has officiated at matches in the English Football League (EFL) and FA Cup is to appear in court charged with a sexual offence.

He is set to appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on 7th March when a plea will be entered relating to a charge of sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15 years.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body responsible for refereeing games in English professional football, suspended Viccars last year while a police investigation was ongoing. He has not officiated at a game since last season.

“As soon as the allegations came to light, Mr Viccars was immediately suspended,” said a spokesperson for PGMOL.

“As the matter is the subject of an ongoing police investigation, we are not in a position to comment any further.”
