Mental Health Cleaning in Milton Keynes

Mental Health Cleaning: Clean spaces, healing places - uplifting lives with free cleaning.

We’re two volunteers based in Milton Keynes, and together we run Mental Health Cleaning (MHC) – a small, self-funded, volunteer-led initiative that offers a free, one-off clean of one room, once a month, to people who are struggling with their mental or physical health

Founded in 2023, MHC was created in response to the growing number of people suffering in silence in their homes behind closed doors.

We’ve both experienced difficult times in our own lives and know how quickly a home can become overwhelming when you're dealing with grief, illness, depression, anxiety, or trauma.

Many of the people we help have reached crisis point, are isolated, lack a support network, unable to afford a cleaner, and often too ashamed to ask for help. That’s where we come in – without judgement, and with lots of compassion.

Our free cleaning service helps to break this cycle. We clean with care, not just to tidy a space, but to help people feel proud of their homes again. We want to give people back a sense of control, motivation and a chance to focus on their recovery – and sometimes, just knowing someone cares is a huge step forward.

One of our recent cleans was for a single parent, supported by a local MK Charity (who help vulnerable people with housing and support). They had had struggled for years after losing their partner and was struggling to raise their daughter alone while managing their grief and poor health. Their daughter’s bedroom, once a safe space, had become a painful reminder of everything they couldn’t cope with. In one day, we transformed it.

Their support worker said, “They put love into that space. She can have sleepovers and feel proud again. This could happen to anyone. Grief, illness, trauma—just one or two things can tip the balance. MHC gave this family a fresh start.”

Another client, supported through our community project with MK College, said:

“Where do I start? I was overwhelmed. I’d stopped letting my family visit out of embarrassment – but not anymore! Seeing the makeover and waking up to my new livingroom and my clean bedroom felt like Christmas. Everything is gleaming and is so organised. This year, I’m putting up a Christmas tree for the first time in years. It used to be just a house – now I’m proud to say it’s my home.”

Mental Health Cleaning is about more than just tidying – it’s about empowering individuals to reclaim control over their homes and, in turn, their lives. By transforming their physical surroundings, we give them the foundation to begin focusing on recovery and self-care.

We’re self-funded and rely on kind donations, sponsorships and fundraising to keep going.
