Two lanes were closed following an accident on the M1 Southbound between J15 (Northampton) and J14 (Milton Keynes) involving a car and a lorry.
The motorway was fully re-opened at just after midnight on Thursday morning.
Shocking images shared on social media have shown motorists blocking access to emergency services trying to access the major accident.
Motorists on the road reported large numbers of emergency services vehicles including the Fire Brigade and Ambulance on the scene.
There were delays of up to 90 minutes against expected traffic.
