The strategy pledges the Labour-led council, supported by the Liberal Democrats, build more than 100,000 new houses and expand MK’s borders.
The council's report establishes their vision for expanding Milton Keynes’ population from 250,000 to 500,000 in just 30 years and has come under fire from a host of politicians including both of MK’s MPs, Ben Everitt and Iain Stewart plus neighbouring councils such as Aylesbury Vale District Council (AVDC) and Buckinghamshire County Council (BCC).
The council has earmarked £3.5 million in order to press forward with their plans.
The £3.5 million figure, described as “Strategy to 2050 (PlanMK / MK Futures)" will be used to fund plans and growth studies based on the report’s strategy.
Residents are concerned about the depletion of Milton Keynes’ green space. Despite the report outlining a vision to make Milton Keynes a “national park city”, it also commits MK to allocating 500 hectares of land for employment purposes, constructing more than 100,000 new homes and establishing the much-opposed Expressway, a project that would see communities such as Woburn Sands cut in two.
Leader of the Conservative Group Cllr Alex Walker said: “This Labour-led council, supported by their Liberal Democrat partners are driving through aggressive, reckless and crippling plans that would destroy everything we love about Milton Keynes.
"This plan would put to the sword our renowned green spaces, our great local communities and enforce unnecessary new pressures onto our hospital.
"Milton Keynes should be allowed to grow organically and on day one of a Conservative-led council, we would listen to our residents’ concerns and bin these plans.”
