Ex-Milton Keynes MP backs petition to reverse winter fuel cuts

Campaign to reverse winter fuel allowance cut receives hundreds of signatures. Hundreds of residents across Milton Keynes have signed a petition to see huge cuts to pensioner’s winter fuel allowance reversed.

The cities Labour MPs are faced with growing backlash over their recent votes in the House of Commons.

Emily Darlington and Chris Curtis MP, elected earlier this year, are facing criticism over their vote to scrap the Winter Fuel Allowance for over 26,000 elderly people across Milton Keynes.

The Labour Government’s scrapping of the Winter Fuel Payment comes despite Labour’s Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Darren Jones MP, saying that Labour had ‘no plans to make changes’ to pensioner benefits.

Around 880,000 vulnerable pensioner households will miss out on the Winter Fuel Payment despite being on very low incomes.

Former MP, Ben Everitt said: “These new cuts will have a devastating impact on our pensioners in our area. The hastily implemented policy is not thought through and leaves the most vulnerable at risk.

“Our new MPs must listen to residents and push Rachel Reeves to reverse this decision so that those who worked hard and saved all of their life, live with dignity and security in retirement.”
