How will testing at Milton Keynes' drive-through coronavirus test centre work?

A pilot scheme launched yesterday (19/4) and if successful, the drive-through test centre will be open throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

The centre, which is in Central Milton Keynes, will be conducting swab tests to find out if an individual has COVID-19.

It has been reported that people will have to go through their employer to book an appointment to get tested.

Swab tests, also known as diagnostic tests, will require a swab from either the person's nose or throat.

Public Health England (PHE) states that samples should be taken from the upper respiratory tract. If a swab is taken from the individual's nose, a swab must go through the nostril, right to the back of the nose, to the nasal cavity and where it meets the throat.

Alternatively, if a swab is taken from someone's throat, a tongue depressor may be used. This means that the nurse will be able to see the back of the throat and subsequently take two throat swabs.

The swabbing process should only take a few seconds. Although it may be uncomfortable, the method should be painless.

If possible, in some cases, sputum (saliva and mucus) may also be taken.

Once the test has been conducted, the sample will be sent to a laboratory for testing. The individual should receive their results within a few days.

Currently, healthcare workers are getting prioritised for testing. However, the Government has announced an extended list of people who are eligible. These include:

    - Police, fire and rescue services

    - Local authority staff, including those working with vulnerable children, adults and victims of domestic abuse, and those working with the homeless and rough sleepers

    - Defence, prisons and probation staff, and judiciary

    - Frontline benefits workers
